Many Kentuckians had traditionally endowed liquors with medicinal properties. In 1819 Dr. ” 50 In 1842 a committee of the Physiological Temperance Society reported, however, there was no discernible evidence that the habitual use of alcohol would fend off diseases. The group would not declare categorically there was no epidemic whatsoever in which alcoholic spirits might not act as a Temperance to Prohibition in Antebellum Kentucky 27 preventive, but it did affirm “fearlessly” that in any such epidemic the individual who had been “rigidly abstinent” to that time would be better able than a drinker to meet the crisis.
