Specialisation was something that occurred more directly in graduate than in undergraduate work. Philosophy was in the bloodstream of German, French and Italian students in a way it rarely was among their British contemporaries. And philosophy often informed the formal study of historiography, frequently in relation to the study of classical Greek and Latin authors for whom philosophy and history had been deeply and often indissolubly interrelated.
